Financial Realizations
The reality is when my dad passes away, I’ll be in charge of tying up his life’s loose ends. He knows, he’s cool with it. Not the dying part, I don’t know how he feels about that. But he is ok with me having more access to his finances so I can pay people off and shut things down when the time comes.
My dad and I get along well enough, but we’ve never been close. I can’t tell you where he was born and he didn’t show up to my birth. We’re emotionally and physically distant, but we technically love each other, so now I spend a few hours a month mustering up the strength to call and ask about his savings and debts for the thousandth time.
Meanwhile, I’m also trying to change my own spending and saving habits so I can have a real safety net for the first time ever.
So how does a financially illiterate adult finally learn how to handle their own business AND manage their distant parent’s mysterious estate? Beats me, man.
